Hello, there! I’m Christopher, which you should have known if you saw my cute little green logo. So, let me not distract you from the following post. I hope you like it! I’d love to hear your thoughts after you’re done reading it! Enjoy!
Well, it's about time for me to share my favorite music that released last year! This is one of my favorite posts of the year because music is something I love love love and want to share with y'alls!
So, I am gonna share my favorites from last year, with some additions and changes from the previous post I did. Since I listened to over 500 songs this year, it was a lot harder to categorize everything, so I have a few sub-categories to present to you before I share the big lists!
But before we get to the lists, I want to do a little music flashback.
Looking Back . . .
During the year of 2017, I took the time to learn about some amazing artists. A Christian metal band from the 90's, Crystavox, became one of my favorites. I had heard their ballads "Home Again" and "No Boundaries" prior to listening to their two albums "Crystavox" and "The Big Picture." And I was in for a rockin' surprise! I enjoyed jamming out to their songs, such as "Cry Out," "Sacrifice," and my favorite of them all, "Break Down The Walls."
Then I discovered an online radio station that aided me in the search for awesome rockers. Since 2011, Dead To Self Radio has been the place to listen to awesome Christian rock from the 80's to today, featuring classic bands such as Petra, modern acts like P.O.D., bands that chug on like Stryper, and those you may have not heard of, such as All Above Me.
It was through Dead To Self Radio that I discovered that opera and metal could be forged together with the likes of HB, that a band from Sweden named Audiovision did a stellar cover of Stryper's "The Way," and that Michael Cutting of the popular Christian rock band from the 90's Holy Soldier had released his own solo project.
Dead To Self Radio fueled my interest in a popular band known as Disciple. This year I enjoyed their albums "O God Save Us All" and "Long Live The Rebels." Though their style of rock is a little too aggressive a times for my taste, "Radical" and "Vultures" are calling my name from my stack of CDs waiting to be listened to.
Another band, Theocracy, has captured my attention. I took time to listen to "Theocracy" and "Mirror Of Souls" and be absolutely amazed at the deep lyrics and the amazing musicmanship! (Yah, I think I just made up a word.)
But it wasn't just rock I found myself jamming to. I found myself putting rap on repeat a lot during that time, such as "Say I Won't" and "Manolo." (Honestly, it must have been the Magic & Bird mixtape that did it.) And when I was trying to get some schoolwork done, I would turn on Salt Of The Sound (and RED).
But I did listen to a ton of music that released in 2017. Let's see what are my favorites!!!
Best Version Of "Stars"
Okay, this category may seem weird, but this year Skillet released two different of their 2016 hit "Stars." (And with the release of "Unleashed Beyond," you could argue that "Stars" can also be a 2017 release or re-release.)
When the Shack Version released, I thought it was very nice to hear an acoustic version of the song that many loved. But it sounded more like an acoustic remix (in that the original vocals were used instead or a complete re-recording). When "Unleashed Beyond" was first advertised, it seemed like it was going to feature the Shack Version of the song. Instead, it featured a Film Version. And when I heard that, I was blown away by how beautiful it sounded! My only problem is that it doesn't include the second verse, but is that worth bumping it down? Not in my opinion!
Best Cover Of 2017
Next up would be my favorite cover of the year. For an artist to pull off a cover well, they must be able to respect the original but be able to add their own creative flavor to the song. I didn't hear way too many covers this year, but here are a few that I did hear:
5. Jeremy Camp - Awake O Sleeper (The Brothers Bright cover)
4. Where Fire May Fail - Let It Rain (Michael W. Smith cover)
3. RED - Unstoppable (Sia cover)
2. Mandisa - Back To Life (All About Worship cover)
1. Guardian + Whitecross - In The Kingdom (Whitecross cover)
Liberty Worship Collective - Our God Is Love, among others
Guardian + Whitecross - Never Say Goodbye & Enough Is Enough
Best Album Art Of 2017
Sometimes, the best way to capture someone's attention is by having an attractive album art, and these were killer!!!
5. Carmen Justice - Against The Odds
4. Colton Dixon - Identity
3. Mandisa - Out Of The Dark
2. Matthew West - All In
1. Gabe Miller - Spaceship Joyride
Liberty Worship Collective - Liberty Worship Collective
AMP - FUTUREGEN

Best Music Video Of 2017
Music videos never seem to be old. A good music video is able to show the heart of a song and give the song a whole new meaning! (Or it can be overdone and the audience start to ask that the nut they watched.) Either way, I did see my share of impressive music videos from 2017!
7. Where Fire May Fail - Let It Rain
6. Lecrae & Tori Kelly - I'll Find You
5. Gabe Miller & Adler Davidson - College Life
4. Capital Kings & Hollyn - All Good
3. Uzuhan - Mung Beans & Tofu

GAWVI - Rock N Roll
Best EP Of 2017
EPs have become quite a trend in recent days as an easier way for an artist to release a collection of songs while not spending an exorbitant amount of money in order to share their stories. Here are some of my favorite EPs from this year!
7. Sarah Finegan - Awake The Dawn
6. Gabe Miller - Spaceship Joyride
5. Holly Starr - Human
4. Verses - Chapter 1
3. Hannah Holloway - The Giver
2. Charis - Shadow
1. Carmen Justice - Against The Odds
Out of the four albums ApologetiX released this year, this would have to be my favorite! This has more rock based tunes on this record, which made it a rockin' more fun to listen to! But it's not just the genre I really enjoyed, the lyrics are filled with many amazing lines and blessings from the Word of God. O maybe even a retelling of the parable of the Samaritan in "Turn To Luke!"
You Give Up On Bad Days
Talk Daily To Me
2. Mandisa - Out Of The Dark
Back To Life
Bleed The Same
The One He Speaks Through
1. RED - Gone
I was super excited for this album to release. Honestly when I first heard it, I didn't think highly of it as I do now. I kept playing it over and over again and slowly grew to love it even more. I would say that I have listened all the way through this album more than any other! While not every single song is stellar, there are many amazing tracks and it has a great flow. Plus, it has meaningful messages!
Still Alive (Looking For A Reason)
Selah - Unbreakable

5. Willow Stephens - History Speaks
4. KB + Aha Gazelle - Monster
3. RED - Losing Control
2. ApologetiX - You Give Up On Bad Days
1. MercyMe - Even If
I cannot believe how good this song is! I first hear it on the radio and I was pleasantly surprised that it didn't really sound like the recent MercyMe songs. But also the lyrics soon jumped out at me and I thought "This song is so amazing!" I know it has been impacting many people so they can trust the Lord, even if it seems like it is all hopeless.

Looking Ahead . . .
Not only we got those new artist making moves this year, but also we got some comebacks this year! Stryper is hyping up their next album as their best one yet. VERIDIA signed with Razor & Tie and is in the studio recording new music (let's hope they don't stray like Icon For Hire). LoveCollide is ready to make a statement with their next album "Tired Of Basic." tobyMac has previewed his new sounds with "I Just Need U." The Reach Records collective, 116, is hyping a release under the name of "Light Bearer." And the next for KING & COUNTRY album is longer overdue.
But we also got people releasing new songs this year again. Social Club Misfits are ready to release their sophomore major label release. GAWVI can't be stopped with surprising us with bangers. Andy Mineo has been talking about his next album for quite awhile. And ApologetiX will keep releasing bi-weekly singles (and hopefully the live CD/DVD from last summer).
2018 is shaping up to be a great year! I'm excited to see what's up ahead
