Hello, there! I’m Christopher, which you should have known if you saw my cute little green logo. So, let me not distract you from the following post. I hope you like it! I’d love to hear your thoughts after you’re done reading it! Enjoy!
As you all may know, I love Disqus. It’s an awesome place to interact and to discuss things. The icing on the cake is when the moderators do their part.
Yep, I said it. When the mods do their part. So, let me give mods five tops on how to create a more enjoyable experience for the commenters. Here we go.
1. Recommend the disqusions
This is something I do all the time whenever I publish a post (and even if I didn’t do it right away, I usually will recommend it the next day). If y’all didn’t know, the Disqus homepage is a feed where you see what Disqus and/or the people/communities you follow have recommended. On the tread, do you see that heart? You clicking on it helps spread the word about the disqusion and the website. As a moderator, I use it to notify my followers of a new post. Yet I know that not everyone may check the homepage, some do and I sometimes get extra traffic whenever I recommend a post. I really think that this is an effective “RSS feed.” (Remember not to spam other by re-recommending the discussion too much. I may re-recommended a post a second time, but I don’t do it again for at least a month.)
2. Reply to the others commenters as soon as possible.
Imagine if you wrote a letter (or email, for those of you who doesn’t know what paper is) to a friend, or even someone you look up to, you may anticipate a response. And I expect the same from comments. And I do my best to follow the Golden Rule by replying to others. The thing is that I sometimes delay reply later than I really should, and I am working on that. But if you are a moderator of a blow-up community like “Destruciod,” “Squid,” or the Rebelution,” then I’d try to just pick out the more important comment and welcome the new commenters, but this works for only select communities. Of course, it is wise to add more moderators! If you don’t have time to reply but to scroll through the comments, then you probably should follow the next step, which is . . .
3. Upvote those awesome comments!
Those upvotes are one of the most awesome things about Disqus! I love them! They are a way to show the user (if they check their notifications) that you like the comment, or at the very least, that you saw the comment. I am a huge advocate of upvotes. I love upvoting others, even if I don’t get upvotes back. In fact, most people I talk to have more upvotes than comments, while I’m the other way around (gasp!).
4. Welcome new commenters to the community
I think it is a great idea to welcome new people! It makes them feel welcome and makes them want to come back. You want them back, right?
5. Feature your favorite comment
Wow, I seriously had no idea how special featuring comments is for the people! They love it and that pleases me. I shall be doing that more and more!
Of course, these tips work best for smaller communities and may not work for all. But I’m sure that you can try them all!
If I get 150 followers, then comes another special Disqus post!
Hello again! I’m so happy you finished reading my post, and, boy, do I hope you liked it!
