Hello, there! I’m Christopher, which you should have known if you saw my cute little green logo. So, let me not distract you from the following post. I hope you like it! I’d love to hear your thoughts after you’re done reading it! Enjoy!
In the year of 2016, I have really been immersed in music. In addition, there has been a lot of changes I went through in my life this year.
I remember one of the discussion questions last year (or was it two years ago?) on the Rebelution was something along the lines of “What song would sum up your year?”
And I can’t give just one song. This year has been all over the place for me.
So I’ll give 25. :DDD
Here, since there are so. many. songs. these songs will not be in any real order.
With each song, I will give a little commentary on how it correlated with my life this year.
At the end, if I remember to do so, there will be a Spotify playlist featuring all 25 songs, so you can listen to the songs you are interested in.
Let’s get started.
ApologetiX’s “Love & Kisses” – This song is like a rock party anthem declaring “I love the Lord with all my might / My heart and everything.” Just something I have been really trying to do: surrendering my whole life to the Lord and trusting Him in everything. #JustChillAndTrustHim (Funny, because according to my iTunes, the last time I listened to the song was in March. Time to make that right!) (Runner up: “Nightmare Waiting”)
Stryper’s “To Hell With The Devil” – Sometimes an evil thought might come to my brain, and I call on the name of Jesus. And then I like to say, “To hell with the devil!!!” I believe the devil should have no rule and authority over our lives, so I love this song because it declares my freedom from him. Freedom is only found in Jesus Christ! “To Heaven With The Savior!” (Plus, wouldn’t have this song worked well for Trump’s campaign? :P) (Runner ups: “The Rock That Makes Me Roll” & “Big Screen Lies)
Skillet’s “Feel Invincible” – Sometimes I just kinda feel down because of the thoughts and feelings I may have. While we are humans and shouldn’t avoid those feelings completely, I do believe we should be able to rise up and ride on the wind. When I’m down, I try not to stay down forever; I rise up! The Bible says that the righteous may get knocked down several times, but he shall get back up. “You make me feel invincible / Earthquake powerful / Just like a tidal wave / You make me brave.” (Runner ups: “Hero,” “Not Gonna Die,” & “Fire & Fury”)
Lacey Sturm’s “You’re Not Alone” – The feeling of being alone has kinda come down upon me at times. It’s amazing to think how God is always with us. Just something I have had to remind myself many, many times: God is with us. “Beyond the universe / Echoes out a promise to us / When the darkness meets the day / You’re not alone.” (Runner ups: “Impossible” & “The Reason”)
Guardian’s “Little Things” – “Easier said than done” is something we always repeat to ourselves. We give each other encouragement, but it sometimes takes awhile for it to sink in. But sometimes “It’s just the little things / That you whisper to me” that really comfort me and remind me of the goodness of God. “Finally letting it go / Shedding layers of anger / Tired and old / Finally letting it go / Slowly warming my soul in the afterglow.” (Runner ups: “Never Say Goodbye” & “See You In Heaven”)
Theocracy’s “Ghost Ship” – This song is like one of those “Little Things.” Just reminding myself that I am always able to serve the Lord no matter how or what people think of me, or even how I think of myself. I can always join my Lord and do amazing things for him. “All aboard / As the captain calls his misfits / This ghost ship / Sets sail to shake the world.” (Runner up: “I AM”)
Britt Nicole’s “All This Time” – No matter what I may go through, God is always there to lead and guide me. He will never leave. He loves me and I am so grateful for that. “You were there / You were always there / It was you and I / You’ve been walking with me / All this time.” (Runner up: “Breakthrough”)
Lecrae’s “Can’t Stop Me Now” – So many things have come my way this year, good and bad. But I can’t let it keep me down. I don’t wanna live in defeat. I want to rise up and not let it keep me down. “So tell the depression it can fly away / Tell my doubts that they can die today / Imma catch me a wave / Sail away / Can’t stop me now.” (Runner up: “Fear”)
Newsboys’ “Enemy” – While I don’t think I had a full-blown “depression” this year, I did (and do) have some really down moments. I remember a month or two ago, I was thinking some negative thoughts that made me doubt if I was accepted in my church. But who was creating those thoughts? Me. “Now I can see / I’ve been my own worst enemy.” (Runner up: “Crazy” & “Committed”)
Kari Jobe’s “Steady My Heart” – Again, Just Chill And Trust Him. Cast my cares upon the Lord, for He will help me. BIG TIME! “But You’re there / And You’re real / I know I can trust you.” I really do need the Lord’s help in calming my spirit. (Runner up: “I Am Not Alone” & “Forever”)
VERIDIA’s “Still Breathing” – I am so grateful that I am alive! I’m still alive! I’m still breathing. The flight to the USA didn’t kill me. Down times didn’t kill me. The election didn’t kill me. “All I know is that we don’t always get a / Happy ending / It’s not about where we are right now / But where we are going.” (Runner ups: “We Are The Brave” & “Pretty Lies”)
tobyMac’s “Eye On It” – Keep pressing on with what I’m doing. That’s what I strive to do. I’ve been doing my website for two years and my school work for much longer, but I still continue to do with what I do with the prize in my mind. “I got my eye on the prize / I got my eye on it.” (Though, like I mentioned in my post “Run Not Only For The Prize,” the prize shouldn’t be the only thing that consumes me. Though I have a goal in mind, I’m not trying to create the future; I’m just trying to navigate the present.)
Sky Dixon’s “Enough” – We struggle with being accepted and being loved and so many other things. This world tries to set standards for everyone and they’re really hard to reach them. “So I trust / That your love make me more than enough.”
Go Fish’s “Victory” – “There is victory in Jesus / There is victory in Him / He gave me grace / I gave Him my sing / He died on the cross / And the rose from the grave / There is victory in Jesus / There is victory in Him.” AMEN! Enough said.
pureNRG’s “It’s All About You” – Again, just trying to make Christ 100% the centre of my life. “When my friends ask me what got me going so crazy / I let them know / It’s all about you.”
Hillsong UNITED’s “Oceans (Where Feet May Fail)” – Man, this song has made such an impact on my life. I might do a post on it one day. I don’t know. Either way, it’s an amazing song that has become one of the prayers of my life. “Spirit lead me where my trust is without borders / Let me walk upon the water / Wherever you may call me.” (Runner up: “Touch The Sky”)
for KING & COUNTRY’s “Shoulders” – Again, just trusting the Lord to help me through those tough times and casting my cares upon him. Just Chill And Trust Him. “My help comes from you / You’re right here / Pulling me through.” (Runner up: “Fix My Eyes”)
Fireflight’s “For Those Who Wait” – There have been so many instances in my life, but especially in this past year, on how we had to wait for the Lord to move and for him to make things come together. Sometimes it has been a bit painful, but worth it in the end. “The pressure makes us stronger / The struggle makes us hunger / The hard lessons make the difference / And the difference makes it worth it.” (Runner up: “Unbreakable”)
Matt Maher’s “Lord, I Need You” – I don’t think I’ve ever finished listening to the Matt Maher version of the song (nor have I heard any other professional recordings of the song) and I don’t think I’m a huge fan of it. My church does sing it every once in awhile and I thought it was fine. But B showed me how amazing this song is and I do love it. “Lord, I need you / Oh, I need you/ Every hour I need you.” It’s my prayer every day. #JustChillAndTrustHim
Julianna Zobrist’s “Alive” – I just love this song! Not only it has a great beat, but it also shows how wonderful it is to be saved and what life God gives. “I / I feel alive / I feel like the air is rushing in / Now it’s clear / I can’t go back again.” (Runner up: “Shatterproof”)
Jeremy Vanderloop’s “No Death” – God is all powerful and I just love this powerful reminder! “No death can hold you down / You rose up from the ground / Jesus, your name is highest / Hallelujah / Hallelujah.” Amazing!
MercyMe’s “The Hurt And The Healer” – This song has always struck a chord with me since the day I first heard it. “I’m alive / Even though a part of me has died.” Really moving song.
Lauren Daigle’s “How Can It Be” – I remember in the beginning of the year how I was just in awe of Christ dying for us sinners. “You plead my cause / You right my wrongs / You break my chains / You overcome / You gave your life / To give me mine / You say that I am free / How can it be?” I love this song so much.
Tenth Avenue North’s “What You Want” – I have really been trying to seek God’s will for my life. It’s not my will, but His alone. “You’re changing my heart / To what would you want.”
Francesca Battistelli’s “Holy Spirit” – I love singing this song in church. “Holy Spirit / You are welcome here / Come flood this place with your atmosphere.” Come fill us. Fill us. How we need you.
You know what, there actually might be a song out of all these that might be the one that would really be the song of my year. Stay tuned tomorrow to find out which one it is!
Thanks so much for reading. 25 songs is a lot and I’d love to hear which songs out of these you know and which songs sum up your year. Please share a comment down below because I love reading them!
God bless you all and let us welcome 2017 with open arms!
